Carness Road closures ahead
Date: 12 July 2021
Time: 03:41
Carness Road in Kirkwall will be closed between its junctions with Weyland Bay and Craigiefield roads, from Monday 19 July 2021 to late August, to enable road works required by Phase 1 of the new Council housing development at Carness.
Works include the construction of a new footway to provide connectivity to the existing footway network on Carness Road, Weyland Bay and Islands View Road, as well as streetlighting and carriageway repairs.
In order for the works to be carried out safely, the road will be completely closed from 08:00 to 18:00, Monday to Friday, throughout the works.
A suggested detour via Junction Road, Clay Loan, Dundas Crescent, School Place, East Road, Work Road and Carness Road will be signposted.
Public Bus Service 9 (Town Service) will be affected by the road closures – buses will be diverted through Moar Drive re-joining the route on Islands View Road, meaning there will be no pickups on Carness Road between Weyland Bay and Craigiefield Roads between 08:00 and 18:00, Monday to Friday during the dates noted below.
Its expected work will be carried out in two stages – with the first stage taking place between Monday 19 July to Friday 30 July, followed by a two week break before works restart with the second stage on Monday 16 August to 27 August.
Any updates will be provided on the Council website and on the 'OIC Updates' Facebook page.
Phase 1 of the Council’s housing development at Carness will deliver 32 Council homes - twenty 1-bedroom and twelve 2-bedroom properties.
Phase 2 proposals are to develop a further eight 2-bedroom and six 3-bedroom properties.
