Bringing the community together with music and song

Date: 1 July 2019

An invitation has been issued for people in Orkney to form a community choir and take part in a special performance at St Magnus Cathedral.

The event later this month will play a part in improving the lives of people in Orkney with learning disabilities.

“The choir will bring together people with learning disabilities, their families and carers with folk of all ages and abilities from throughout our local community,” said Sally Shaw, Chief Officer of Orkney Health and Care.

“We’re developing plans to help ensure that people with learning disabilities can live longer, healthier lives, take part in all aspects of local life and flourish as individuals.

“Inclusiveness is the key to this. We can be proud that in Orkney we have an inclusive and welcoming community – and this specially formed choir will symbolise that.

“But there are always further steps we can all take to make sure people with learning disabilities can be as actively involved in community life as possible.

“So we will also use the occasion to launch a consultation and ask for feedback on our new Learning Disabilities Strategy for the years ahead.”

London-based choirmaster and theatre director Tom Sergeant has offered his services in bringing the community choir together.

Rehearsals will be held at Lifestyles at the Pickaquoy Centre on Thursday 18 July between 10:00 and 12:00 or from 13:00 and 15:00.

The performance will then take place at the Cathedral at 11:00 on Friday 19 July.

“Tom firmly believes that all of us can sing, whatever we think of our own abilities,” Sally added. “We’d love as many people as possible to get involved in what should be a fun and memorable occasion.”
