Blue Badge holders asked for views on Albert and Bridge Street access changes

Date: 25 February 2025

Time: 12:00

Blubadgeholders

Do you hold a Blue Badge, or have mobility issues which hinder you getting around – or care for someone who does?

The Council’s Roads team are holding two engagement events to gather feedback from folks with mobility issues on proposed changes to the current ‘Prohibition of Driving’ for Bridge Street and Albert Street.

The proposals would see Bridge Street and Albert Street closed to vehicular traffic, apart from emergency services and essential building and utility repair vehicles:

  • Between 11am and 3pm every day, and
  • Between 11pm and 3am every night.

The Council is keen to understand how these proposals - which are aimed at improving the safety of pedestrians and reducing traffic noise at night for nearby residents - would affect folks with mobility concerns.

Please come along to one of these events to speak to the team:

  • Wednesday 26 February from 10:00am - 2:30pm at Age Scotland Orkney at 46 Victoria Street,  Kirkwall.
  • Wednesday 5 March from 11:00am - 2:30pm at the Kirkwall Town Hall (Broad Street, Kirkwall)

(Currently, all vehicles are prohibited from driving on Albert Street, between Laing Street and Broad Street, between 11am and 3pm daily – with the exception of emergency service vehicles and Blue Badge holders).

Folks with Blue Badges and accessibility challenges who can’t make either session can complete a quick survey at https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/DPB3KB/

The survey closes on Friday 7 March.

Wider members of the community can email roadssupport@orkney.gov.uk with comments on the proposals which were the subject of extensive community engagement in September last year.

View the full proposals and listen again to debate by Councillors at the recent Development and Infrastructure Committee, on the Council website.
