Black ice and frost warning - 11 and 12 February
Date: 11 February 2021
Time: 06:41
Orkney Islands Council is advising that road conditions will remain hazardous this evening and into tomorrow morning.
Road surface temperatures are currently below zero as at 18:00 (as they have been for most of the day) and are expected to dip down to about 4 degrees below zero overnight.
There is still a hazard of black ice throughout the night, so drivers should avoid unnecessary travel and be mindful that roads that look wet may be icy.
Our new friend hoar frost is about again, as are snow flurries which will last into the early morning.
Further, the wind will begin to pick up from about midnight and increase right through to lunchtime.
That may cause some lying snow to drift in patches. Drivers should again be alert for these, especially in exposed sections, and should ensure they are well prepared for winter travel.
Drivers are reminded roads surface temperatures can remain stubbornly low this time of year, even if the air might start to feel a bit warmer in coming days.
