Autumn roadworks and road closures

Orkney Islands Council will be carrying out road patching and resurfacing works across Orkney over coming months.
The next couple of weeks will see works in Kirkwall, Stromness and St Marys, with expected start date and duration as follows:
- Union Street, Kirkwall – from 4 October for 1 week – road closed between Junction Road and Manse Lane. Signed diversions will be via Holm Branch, Bignold Park and New Scapa Road. Public bus services 4 (Airport) and 9 (Town Service) will not travel along Clay Loan throughout the works and will follow the signed diversions.
- Ayre Mills Roundabout, Kirkwall – from 11 October for 6 days. Work will be carried out in two halves. The first stage will involve closing off access to the Roundabout from Pickaquoy Road and Hatston Brae, with signed diversions in place via Great Western Road, Ayre Mills Road and Hatson (Grainshore Road). The second stage will involve closing off access to the roundabout from Ayre Mills Road and Grainshore Road, with signed diversions via Pickaquoy Road and Hatston Brae. Three way traffic lights will be in place. Access to Ayre Mills filling station will be maintained throughout the works. Public bus services X1, 4, 6, 7, 8S, 9 and X10 will follow the diversions.
- Garson Road, Stromness – From 4 October for one week – Access will be maintained as much as possible but there may be times where full closures are required. These will be limited to no more than 30 minutes. Public bus services X1 may experience some delays.
- A961 through St Marys, Holm – From 11 October for one week – Access will be maintained as much as possible but there may be times where full closures are required. These will be limited to no more than 30 minutes. Public bus services X1 may experience some delays. Update: these works are being rescheduled and will not start on 11 October as previously advised. An updated start date is not yet available.
Work start and completion dates are subject to change due to weather and other factors.
