'Atmospheres' - A brand new exhibition by local artist Russell Gilmour
Date: 27 October 2023
Time: 03:00
Next week sees the opening of a new exhibition at the Orkney Museum, Tankerness House, Kirkwall.
‘Atmospheres’ is a collection of paintings and drawings by local artist, Russell Gilmour. Those that have visited Russell's previous exhibition will be able to view a brand new set of artworks of Magnus Cathedral.
He has painted in the cathedral for several years, a place that has inspired him and continues to do so, as he says:
''I see St Magnus Cathedral as that special place steeped in history, but to this day allows us to step back from the world and return to it with a feeling of renewal. In these works, I have been seeking to capture a sense of this subtle yet powerful atmosphere.''
The Orkney Museum’s Engagement/Exhibitions Officer, Tom Muir, is delighted to have the opportunity to welcome Russell back, as he explains:
“Russell had an exhibition with us just after lockdown was lifted, but we always felt that he deserved another show. Visitor numbers were still low at that time, as people were not always comfortable about going out. What we propose to do, which is a departure from our usual format, is to allow people to buy a painting and take it home with them right away and not wait until the exhibition is over. We will replace it, so that the exhibition will be constantly changing. His paintings and drawings beautifully captures the atmosphere of the cathedral and will lighten up the dark days of winter.”
‘Atmospheres’ by Russell Gilmour runs from the 4 November to 16 December and the museum is open Monday to Saturday from 10.30am-12.30pm and 1.30pm-5.00pm. Admission is free.
