Ancient and historic Orkney narratives explored in new exhibition

Date: 29 January 2021

Time: 01:06

A new exhibition of paintings will open at the Orkney Museum on Tuesday 9 February. 'Echoes of Orkney' is a series of paintings by local artist Tom Nugent celebrating all aspects of Orkney.

Tom explains the inspiration for his work: “This series of interconnected canvasses explores Orkney’s historic and ancient narratives – its myths, legends, stories and events – setting them in modern Orkney landscapes.

“A key part of this project is the specially developed ‘Orkney palette’ that conjures the air of stillness and reflection in Orkney’s twilight and sunrise, through which the featured narratives reverberate.

“I’d like to thank Orkney Island Council for their support through the VACMA fund that allowed me to create this exhibition which marks a return to painting after a long absence.”

Emma Gee, Arts Officer with Orkney Islands Council, explains more about the VACMA fund for artists: "Visual Artist and Craft Maker Award (VACMA) offers small grants to visual artists and craft makers for their creative development at all stages of their career. These awards are supported by Creative Scotland through funding from the National Lottery in partnership with Highlands and Islands Enterprise and Orkney Islands Council.

“In place of previous VACMA awards, this year fixed bursaries are available in recognition of the ongoing impacts of Covid-19 on individual artists and makers. For further information regarding eligibility you can watch the online presentation at www.creativescotland.com/VACMA. To find out about previous artists who have received funding, view the Case Studies in the Arts Development section of the Council website.

'Echoes of Orkney' by Tom Nugent will be on display in the Orkney Museum from 9 February - 26 March. Opening hours and visitor numbers are still restricted to comply with Covid-19 laws. The museum is open on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday every week, from 10:00-12:00 and 14:00-16:00. The number of visitors is currently limited to eight people at any one time. Admission to the Orkney Museum is free.
