Orkney Islands Council is launching a waste and recycling Advent Calendar this year aimed at sharing some fun ideas and tips on how to recycle more for a lower-waste Christmas.

The Advent Calendar will run on the Council’s ‘Eco Active Orkney’ Facebook page from 1 December.

Each day, the team will post ideas and advice for reducing your carbon footprint this festive season.

Jayne Venables is the Council’s Waste Project Coordination Manager: “There are so many good ideas out there for creating a lower-waste festive season.

“From thinking about the type of wrapping paper you’re purchasing, to reminders about food packaging which can be recycled, to donating to and purchasing from charity shops, and sharing food recipes for making good use of Christmas leftovers – there are small things we can all do to reduce waste this Christmas.

“We hope the advent calendar will both give folk new ideas and help them strike up the conversation with family and friends.”

To follow the Advent Calendar, look up 'Eco Active Orkney' on Facebook and ‘like’ the page - and don’t forget to ‘share’.

Look out for some of the Advent Calendar tips and ideas in other public places, and at showing at the Pickaquoy cinema before film screenings.

The team will also be at Tesco on 6 December to speak to members of the public about waste reduction and recycling.
