Additional arrangements for waste collections missed due to snow

Date: 25 January 2024

Waste Service Update.jpg

A reminder for those residents who didn’t get their waste collected last week (week starting 15 January 2024) due to the ice and snow:

  • Please pop along to one of our Household Waste and Recycling Centres (HWRC) as a first option - we’ll explain why in the next bit! As a reminder, household waste is accepted at our Bossack (Tankerness), Garson (Stromness) and Hatston (Kirkwall) HWRCs. Check opening times at www.orkney.gov.uk/hwrc (remember Garson, Bossack and Hatston are closed on Mondays, and Bossack is closed weekends as well) - and offer to help neighbours/friends/family who you think might struggle getting to a tip.
  • If you can’t get to a HWRC, our crews will take ‘side waste’ on your waste collection next week (the week starting Monday 29 January) – by this we mean we’ll accept waste in rubbish bags left beside your waste wheelie bin. Please minimise the number of extra bags that are put out, to help us get round to everyone – this could include holding over some waste for the next collection if you’re able, or an additional trip to the tip. Squishing packaging right down and recycling everything you can will also maximise space in your refuse bin/bags and also help us tremendously.
  • Please ensure bags are sturdy enough for lifting/not overfull and are securely tied shut - and arranged so as not to become an issue in high winds.
  • Please also bear in mind that our ‘ashey kerts’ can get very full on our collection days at the best of times - so if there is a lot of side waste left out crews may need to return to base and empty the lorry at our Chinglebraes site (which could mean delayed collections, or routes which can’t be completed on their usual designated day.)

Once again thank you to all our residents for their patience as we get back to normal after a trying week last week.
