Orkney Islands Council will soon be handing over the reins to part of the Stromness Squash Courts to the Orkney Amateur Weight Lifting Club, in what is the first ‘Community Asset Transfer’ for the county.

Orkney’s economic, environmental and cultural assets will be showcased to northern neighbours later this month when Orkney Islands Council’s Leader and Chief Executive present at the Arctic Circle Assembly.

An information session is due to take place at the Orkney Research and Innovation Campus in Stromness next week (Thursday 14 October) for local people to find out more about a pilot project exploring the use of autonomous - or self-driving - vehicles (AVs).

Residents of high-risk flood areas in Orkney have hailed the recent flood resilience event a great success.

The Council hosted the resilience community engagement event at the end of September with a visit from the Scottish Flood Forum (SFF) – Scotland’s only charity dedicated to supporting flood-risk communities. Their aim is to reduce the impacts of flooding on individuals and communities, through providing immediate support and by establishing a network of community resilience groups in flood risk areas to equip communities to cope with the impacts and threat of flooding.
