Stromness Academy honours student achievement during celebration

Date: 04 June 2024

Stromness Academy held its annual Celebration Evening, recognising the efforts, achievement, and contributions to the life of the school of its students.

The event, filled with live music, praise, and laughter, took place in the school's theatre on Friday night, with around 180 proud pupils, families, friends, and staff gathering at fairy-lit tables.

The evening began with students, Einar Towrie and Connor Bayliss, piping the award winners into the hall

Connor Bayliss was honoured for his achievements in Advanced Higher Mathematics and Physics, while Einar Towrie was recognised for his significant contribution to the school's positive ethos during his years at the Academy.

Headteacher Paul Barber warmly welcomed the attendees, followed by guest speaker and former pupil, Kerris Ritchie. Kerris shared her inspiring journey, including her worldwide travels, and encouraged pupils to seize opportunities as they arise.

Over 85 prizes were awarded. Awards were given for high attainment and endeavour in various subjects and to students who have demonstrated motivation, excellence, and the school's core values: to be positive, purposeful, respectful, resilient, proud and responsible. The school’s DUX award, for highest attainment, was awarded to Christa Bevilacqua.

A particularly poignant moment was the presentation of The Stephen Crawford Memorial Prize to Ewan Foubister for his significant contributions to the school's life and his role as a positive role model for younger students.

A new category of awards, Special Endeavour, recognised students who have contributed to the positive ethos of the school. Recipients included Emily Fisher, Logan Brown, Sarah Mehmi, and Einar Towrie.

During the interval, attendees enjoyed a selection of light refreshments, generously provided by the Parent Council and viewed artwork on display in the foyer, including Daniel Reid's painting of Stromness Streets. Daniel, an S5 student, was recognised for his achievements in Art and Design, Photography, German, and Business Management. The school's wind band, string band 'Belt Hid Oot', and solo singers also showcased their musical talents throughout the evening.

The event also introduced the new S6 Leadership Committee and paid kind farewells to retiring teachers Babette Hegarty, Depute Headteacher, and Neil Blance, Principal Teacher of Physics, who were praised for their many years of dedicated service to the school.

The event was sponsored by local businesses and groups, including Stromness Academy Parent Council, Xodus Group Ltd, M & L Leitch, and Gray Associates.
