Gas canister safety reminder

Date: 03 June 2024

The Council is reminding the public about the dangers to our waste team staff of incorrectly disposing of gas canisters.

This comes as an increasing number of canisters - used for BBQs, camping stoves and outdoor heating – have been found incorrectly disposed of in wheelie bins at the kerbside.

Service Manager of Environmental Services, Alan Dundas, said: “When they end up in the back of the lorry, they create a risk of fire or explosion when they are crushed as part of our normal handling procedures. They’re pretty heavy too and could harm our staff during the emptying process. Many retailers and suppliers of gas bottles will take back the gas bottle once used. They are refilled and used again and again.

Small helium balloon tanks have also been found in wheelie bins which is another no-no - these are usually single use and should be taken back to the retailer.

Our Bossack site can accept hazardous materials including gas canisters if there’s no other option. Commercial customers will incur a charge for disposal.
