Illegal dumping prompts closure of Cursiter

Date: 29 May 2024

Heads up folks that we’ve had to close the recycling centre at Cursiter Quarry in Finstown following illegal dumping of waste at the site.

Quantities of general waste, including tyres, a mattress, fishing nets and household items have been left, none of which are included in the allowed recyclable materials.

This means that staff will have to attend from other sites to help with the clean-up and it’s anticipated that Cursiter will be closed for two days as a result. We will update on the reopening when we can.

Lorna Richardson, Head of Neighbourhood Services, said: “Our Cursiter facility is for recyclables only, and this is clearly signed at the facility.

It’s disappointing to see ongoing abuse of the facility, inconveniencing the majority of people who do make proper use of the site. There are other facilities that accept general waste.”

Materials accepted at Cursiter Recycling Centre are:

Cans (aluminium and steel).

Glass,

Paper,

Garden waste.

Household batteries.

Scrap metal.

Vehicle batteries.

WEEE (Waste electrical and electronic equipment).

Cardboard.

Fluorescent tubes (including energy bulbs).

Plastic bottles.

Textiles (clothes and shoes).

General waste should be put out for collection as part of fortnightly kerbside refuse collections, or taken to the Council’s Household Waste and Recycling Centre at Garson, Hatston or Bossack.
