Industrial action update

Date: 07 September 2023

Industrial action by unions is expected to impact on Orkney’s schools from 26 to 28 September.

The national pay award negotiations between Scottish Government, COSLA and unions representing non-teaching staff in Orkney's schools have not yet led to an agreement.

At the moment, the Councils Education service is preparing for disruption, and school closures, from 26 – 28 September, with vital staff such as janitors, support for learning assistants and catering staff expected to take part in the action.

James Wylie, Corporate Director of Education, Leisure and Housing, said: “We are at present assessing the likely impact in each school, taking into account a range of factors, including the need to provide a safe environment for children and young people.

“Parents and carers will be notified directly about the impact on their schools , alerting them to the need to make alternate childcare plans on the days their child(ren)s school will be affected.”
