Tributes have been paid to former Councillor Freddie Groundwater who passed away at the weekend.

Freddie was a Councillor from 1996 to 2003, representing communities in the Stromness and Sandwick areas.

During his time as a Councillor he served as vice-chair of the Economic Development Committee, Chair of the Roads and Environmental Services Committee and Chair of the Monitoring and Audit Committee.

Freddie had also been an employee of the Council from 1963 to 1978 working in various roles, including an Administrative Officer in the former Department of Administration, before moving into a role at Flotta as Deputy in Administration, Training and External Relations with Occidental.

He also served on the board of NHS Orkney.

Council Convener Graham Bevan said: "In his time as a Councillor, Freddie was immensely helpful to the communities he served.

“In Stromness he was a tremendous support to the Stromness Church of Scotland and to the local golf club – golf being one of his great passions.  He’ll also be remembered for his time and commitment to the Boys Brigade – contributing greatly to a generation of young lives in the town.

“He will be sorely missed and our thoughts are with his wife Moira and his wider family.”
