Let’s get physical!

A group of folk from Orkney’s care homes and day centres came together recently to enjoy a day of fun, friendship and fitness!

Organised by staff from Smiddybrae House, St Rognvalds House, Hamnavoe House, Gilbertson Day Centre and West Mainland Day Centre, the event saw games and a picnic held at the Evie Community Centre.

Whilst providing an opportunity for the residents and attendees to meet up with old friends and make new ones, this was also about staff introducing the CAPA resource into folk’s daily lives. CAPA – Care About Physical Activity - aims to get the elderly more active day to day without them seeing it as physical exercise.

Our carers are learning how to promote this within their work, supporting people to be more active, which is proven to help people’s wellbeing both physically and mentally.

Throughout the Evie event folk took part in various games and activities, not just having fun but also keeping their muscles moving.

A lovely picnic lunch was provided by the care home kitchens and much enjoyed by all.

Thanks to the Evie Community Association who provided the venue free of charge and to their volunteers who worked so hard behind the scenes.
