Council Playpark Renewal Fund reopens for applications

Date: 24 July 2023

Playpark of Renewal

The £400,000 Playpark Renewal Fund has reopened for applications from communities striving to improve their playpark areas.

Six applications were received from eligible organisations in the county in the first round earlier this year.

The fund, created thanks to Covid-19 recovery funding and managed by the OIC Sport and Leisure service, is now open for applications until 5pm on 8 September 2023.

The one-off recovery fund is geared towards improvement projects within play areas, not for routine maintenance, and those applying will be encouraged to seek external match funding.

The Council’s Service Manager Leisure and Culture, Garry Burton, said: “We were delighted to receive six applications during the first round earlier this year and we now have another opportunity for others to come forward.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for community groups, such as community councils, development trusts, community associations, heritage societies and many other local community groups to apply for funding for capital improvement projects to see some of our many play areas rejuvenated.

“With public sector belt tightening over a number of years and now the cost-of-living crisis this has resulted in the withdrawal of some ageing play equipment - we hope this fund can breathe new life back into the parks.

“We want applications to link to the Council’s Play Area Strategy demonstrating evidence of need, sustainability, achievability, having lasting benefits, enriching quality of life and value for money.

“Encouraging all kinds of outdoor play from an early age is so important in instilling a healthy lifestyle onwards – they encourage children to be creative and imaginative in their play, to learning skills both physical and social.

“We would encourage as many organisations as possible to utilise this pot of money for the good of their wider communities.”

Funding of 50% of eligible costs, up to a maximum grant of £25,000 per project, may be available and those applying will be encouraged to seek match funding.
