Get your Plus Fours on, dig deep into the bunker and support this intrepid quartet on their quest to complete four golf courses and a ferry trip in one day to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Orkney’s Justin MacIver, Paul Robertson, Shaun Robertson and Brian Garson are taking on the Longest Day 72-hole Golf Challenge for the charity on Monday 19 June.

They aren’t green when it comes to teeing off having completed the challenge once before, so they know exactly what’s in store for them!

The quest will see them walking over 20 miles while completing 72 holes.

Justin, a Building Inspector with the Council, said: “Two years ago we decided to take on the challenge to raise money for Macmillan by playing across four golf courses (three in Orkney and one in Thurso after catching a ferry from Stromness to Scrabster) to make the most of the huge amount of daylight we are lucky to have in the North of Scotland!”

The foursome raised £2,500 for the cancer charity in 2021 and are keen to try and beat that total this time round.

Justin continued: “We are playing the same courses again and this year we will teeing off on South Ronaldsay golf course at 4am on Monday 19 June. We then move onto Orkney Golf Club at 8am, followed by a high noon tee-off in Stromness and after a 90-minute journey on the Hamnavoe we will finish in Thurso, starting at 7pm. All being well we should finish the challenge at around 10.45pm as darkness sets in!”

It was fairway weather in 2021 and the lads are hoping for the same in 2023.

Justin said: “Hopefully we can get the same weather this time so I can use the ‘factor ginger’ - nothing worse if it’s raining the whole day!

“Any donations will be greatly appreciated, as the charity makes a massive difference to so many lives. The work they do every day is so much more impressive than four boys hitting a ball around a few golf courses but hopefully, with your help, we can help raise a few pounds!”

Team captain, Paul, is a purser with Orkney Ferries, Shaun works for NorthLink and Brian is a mason with R.Stanger Builders.

Their thanks are extended to all who have donated so far and to the challenge sponsors, including the four golf clubs.
