Annabel’s Council career story…so far

Annabel Bews joined the Council more than three years ago but never imagined at that point that she would be able to progress in her career without what she thought was an “all important degree”.

Annabel recently accepted a progression post as an Economic Development Officer – something she never thought would be possible.

“Even though I have over 10 years relevant office/business experience I felt I’d be unable to pass the initial check for certain posts as someone without a degree, and so I was always on the back foot when it came to moving up the career ladder and was put off applying for posts that required a degree for that reason.

“The progression post in Economic Development was a real career opportunity and those around me have been so helpful and encouraging with my career pathway.  Supporting me in terms of the individual learning and highlighting how I could develop.

“I started with OIC over three years ago, initially as an Administrative Officer and for the past ten months, I have been on secondment as Business Gateway Officer. This has led now to the offer of the Economic Development Officer’s post and I was delighted to accept. I am looking forward to getting started and helping our fantastic local businesses and community groups.”

Annabel said she would encourage others to look into opportunities where on the job training is available.

“Don’t assume you won’t be considered simply because you may not have the paper qualification so to speak. There is so much to be gained from practical experience and learning on the job.”

The Council offers strong career pathways, support for individual learning and development — recently achieving Investors in People accreditation for the first time – and flexible working practices.
