Car park machine changes and summer parking fees reminder

Date: 25 April 2023

Folk in Orkney have driven home their message re the car park machine key pads being a bit of a nuisance when it comes to entering vehicle registration details.

The Council has listened and this week the key pads are being removed – so there’s no longer any need to enter a vehicle registration when getting a ticket.

The engineer is making the changes to the machines this week. If your visit coincides with this happening and you can’t get a ticket, don’t worry, but please we ask that you stick to the one-hour free rule – or get a ticket once the machine is running again.

This means that for the remainder of this week while you can still get a free one-hour ticket, all you need to do is go to the machine and press the green button.

The Council is reminding drivers that the ‘one hour free’ parking run by the local authority over winter ends on 30 April and from 1 May the Council carparks in central Kirkwall and Stromness will revert to the summer tariffs.

The fees in the Albert Street, Castle Street, St Magnus Lane and Gunn’s Close Car Parks in Kirkwall and the Ferry Inn Car Park in Stromness will revert back to £1.20 for 1 hour, with the charge of £2.70 for 2 hours and £5.70 for 3 hours remaining the same throughout the year.

Burgh Road, Great Western Road (North) and Stromness Ferry Terminal car parks remains at £2.40 for up to 4 hours and £3.30 for up to eight hours.
