Here’s the latest roundup of roadworks underway or soon to start in Orkney from Monday 24 April.

Scottish Water are currently working on the A960 in Toab, vehicles will be controlled by traffic lights for the duration of the work.

The collapsed culvert on the Harray Road (A986) remains covered by steel plates while replacement options are being investigated. Further information will be provided in due course once replacement works are programmed.

Streetlighting and footway resurfacing is currently underway on Scapa Crescent and is expected to continue into early June. Access to properties is being maintained. The work will be carried out using a variety of traffic management measures which will include road closures at times.

Slab repairs are underway in various locations in central Stromness from 3 April - all work will be carried out under road closure conditions. The anticipated schedule is:

  • Week 1, John Street from North End Road to E Flett butcher’s shop. Complete
  • Week 2, John Street from E Flett butcher’s shop to Victoria Street, Victoria Street from John Street to No 16 Victoria Street (RNLI building). Complete.
  • Week 3, Victoria Street from No 16 (RNLI building) to Church Road, including the area of Ferry Road around the fountain. Work started on Monday 17 and is currently on schedule to be completed by the end of the week.
  • Week 4, Victoria Street from Church Road to Hellihole Road which includes Graham Place and Dundas Street.
  • Week 5, Melvin Place, Alfred Street, South End and Ness Road.

Drainage maintenance work is planned on the A965 Quanterness Farm area between Monday 17 April and Friday 28 April. The work will be controlled by a temporary traffic signal therefore some delays should be expected.

Work to replace some manhole covers on the A965 in Finstown between the Old Finstown Road and 30mph signs at the eastern (Kirkwall) side of Finstown are planned to start on Monday 24 April 2023. It is hoped the work can be carried out under temporary traffic signals, but this will be confirmed. Work is expected to take around a week to complete.

Looking ahead:

Resurfacing work is currently planned on the A965 in Finstown between the junction with Heddle Road and Baikie’s Stores, from around 2 May. It is hoped that the bulk of the work can be carried out under temporary traffic signals, however there may be the need for road closures particularly on adjoining roads. Details including any impacts on public buses will be confirmed in future updates.
