Shapinsay wheelie bin and recycling bank reminder

Date: 21 March 2023

Shapinsay wheelie bin reminder: alternate weekly waste and refuse collections start 22 March - and recycling bank ends on 26 March

Shapinsay residents are reminded wheelie bin collections start on Wednesday, 22 March.

Households are reminded to have their wheelie bins out by 8am, and within 2m of the public road.

Delivery of bins to some households has unfortunately been delayed by recent severe weather and shipment of ordered bins.

Anyone who has not received their refuse wheelie bin by 22 March can continue to use black bags for their waste.

Recycling wheelie bins are being delivered over coming days and residents should use those for their recycling (or the approved Council containers if you’re using those), storing their recycling until their bins arrive or using the temporary recycling bank at the school which will be available until 26 March. As previously advised, the temporary recycling bank at Shapinsay School will be removed on 27 March and returned to the Ness Point camp site, where it was borrowed from in the tourist off-season to help Shapinsay residents continue recycling while wheelie bins were rolled out.

On recycling weeks, folks are reminded to keep their recyclates separated (so on paper and metals collection week, present your paper in one bin and metals in the other. On glass and plastics weeks, present glass in one bin and plastics in the other.)

Residents can use a small stone to weigh down wheelie bin lids on windy days, or they can buy one of two approved bin clips at www.orkney.gov.uk/binclips

The collection on 22 March will be refuse, with glass and plastics recycling collection on 29 March. Check ongoing collections at www.orkney.gov.uk/mybins

The Council thanks Shapinsay residents for all their support and patience while wheelie bins are rolled out to the community.

Upcoming collections are:

  • Wednesday 22 March - Black/grey bins, no recycling
  • Wednesday 29 March - Please present a bin with glass in one and plastic bottles in the other
  • Wednesday 5 April – Black/grey bins, no recycling
  • Wednesday 12 April – Please present a bin with paper/thin card in one and metal cans, foil, and aerosols in the other
  • Wednesday 19 April- Black/grey bins, no recycling
