Date: 09 December 2022

Time: 09:00

In the run up to Christmas, we have some key safety messages to try and keep everyone happy and healthy over the winter months.

Today’s focus is on mental health.

Christmas can be a very lonely and difficult time for some.

We have ten tips to try and keep the mind and body healthy:

  • Keep active.
  • Get outside.
  • Keep warm.
  • Eat healthily.
  • See the light - some people find light therapy effective for seasonal depression. One way to get light therapy at home in winter is to sit in front of a light box for up to two hours a day.
  • Take up a new hobby.
  • See your friends and family.
  • Talk it through.
  • Join a support group.
  • Seek professional help.

If you're feeling distressed, in a state of despair, suicidal or in need of emotional support you can phone NHS 24 on 111. For an emergency ambulance phone 999.

You can also phone Breathing Space on 0800 83 85 87. Calls are free from landlines and mobiles. There’s also a webchat service available at breathingspace.scot.

YoungMinds Crisis Messenger provides free, confidential, 24/7 crisis support to young people across the UK by text message.

Childline provide support for young people under 19 struggling with mental health issues, or any other problem. You can phone 0800 1111 to speak to an advisor 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Samaritans Scotland - call free day or night on 116 123 or email jo@samaritans.org

Those aged 16-31 in Orkney are now able to access the Togetherall online mental health community website for free at www.togetherall.com
