“From our house to yours” took on an extra special meaning when the grandson of a former resident of Smiddybrae House gifted a handmade birdhouse in her memory for other residents to enjoy.

Mark Waters says his late Granny Smith or “Lily” was well looked after by the staff at the Dounby residential care facility and it was his way of giving something back to say thank you.

“Granny Smith passed away earlier this year after being looked after at Smiddybrae for some time. They were all very good with her. I just felt the need to donate something for all the hard work they do for all the residents and to give them all something to look at in the long winters.”

Mark has only recently started making the unique birdhouses, which each take around 25 hours to complete.

He has two on show at the Pier Arts Centre in Stromness at the moment.

Chief Officer, Orkney Health and Social Care, Stephen Brown, said: “What a thoughtful gift which will not only be enjoyed by residents and staff but I’m sure the birds themselves will be right at home enjoying some welcome treats during the long winter months in Orkney!

“From our house to yours, many thanks to Mark for his delightful one-of-a-kind birdhouse. I am sure his Granny Smith will be looking on proudly.”
