Date: 15 November 2022

Time: 10:51

Glaitness School is opening its doors this week for the launch of a Net Zero project working with Herriot -Watt University.

Glaitness School’s parent community, alongside Elected Members, and the local media are invited to the school on Wednesday 16 November, at 2.15pm for a 2.25pm start to hear from the school’s own Net Zero Heroes, staff and members of the Island Centre for Net Zero project work focusing on “School Run to Net Zero - Getting to School the Glaitness Way".

Head Teacher, Ingrid Rendall, said: “The school has embarked on a unique programme of learning in collaboration with the Island Centre for Net Zero.

“At a time when so many are concerned about rising prices of fuel and worry about climate change, this programme is designed to find a positive way forward for all in our school community. This is not about making demands of anyone but rather trying to explore new more environmentally friendly ways of getting to school that are also beneficial to health and wellbeing and your wallet.

“Our mission was developed by academics but is now being led by our students and our families. Walk this way for a step into our future!

“We hope to see as many folk from our school community and local Councillors as possible.”

One of the school’s Net Zero Heroes is P7’s Abigail, aged 10. She said: “Our planet is in danger from heating up too much; all the ice is melting making the sea levels rise. It does worry me.

“Maybe we should try and find non-carbon ways to get to school and go to work. As part of the project we have been talking about ways to try and convince people to do that.”
