Just weeks after winning a national award for its outstanding welcome to visitors, now Custodian/Visitor Services Officer, Fran Hollinrake, will be sharing more information on the national stage about the building’s historic graffiti.

Fran will be presenting a talk at Making Your Mark 2022, the Historic Graffiti Symposium in York on Saturday 19 November.

She explained: “This comes on the back of our very successful Graffiti Survey in the cathedral, conducted in 2019 and 2020. The project was headed by Orkney Archaeology Society, who secured funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Dr Antonia Thomas from the Archaeology Institute at UHI and myself trained 70 volunteers to record graffiti on the ground floor of the cathedral. Over 600 marks were found and recorded, and Dr Thomas published a research paper on the findings.

“I then conducted graffiti tours during the Orkney International Science Festival, and also produced a leaflet (financed by Orkney Archaeology Society) for the cathedral which highlighted some of the interesting marks to be found. The project was supported by the Church of Scotland congregation.”

The conference will hear from a variety of speakers on several aspects of historic graffiti.

Anyone can attend the event, either in person (£5 for the whole day) or online (FREE).
