Three gyms get a lift from Islands Infrastructure Fund

Three gyms run by the Council are being completely revamped with brand new fitness equipment, new flooring and a repaint, all fully funded thanks a successful application to the Scottish Government’s Islands Infrastructure Fund.

The public Kirkwall Grammar School Gym and Hope Healthy Living Centre gyms are both benefitting, as well as the gym for pupil use at Stromness Academy.

KGS has already undergone its transformation, with Hope and Stromness Academy gyms both closed from 11 October to 23 October for the works.

Chair of the Council’s Education, Leisure and Housing committee, Gwenda Shearer, said: “I’m delighted that officers have once again secured financial support to keep these much valued gyms in top condition with the latest equipment. Initiatives like these are all the more important as we seek to do everything we can to boost folks’ physical and mental health after a difficult few years.”

The KGS gym and St Margarets Hope Healthy Living Centre, based at the Hope Community School, are both open to the public and can be used for free as part of ActiveLife memberships, or for 50p per session for budget ActiveLife members.
