Freyja of Scapa to Arrive in Orkney

Date: 21 October 2022

Orkney's brand new tug - Freyja of Scapa - is due to arrive in Orkney tomorrow (Saturday 22 October).

Having left in Turkey on 6 October - she's completed the 3,500 nautical mile journey  ahead of schedule

She now joins her sister ships, Odin of Scapa and Thor of Scapa in providing towage services across Orkney's harbour services.

Odin and Thor may accompany her as she approaches Kirkwall Pier – subject to other operations.

The tugs play a vital role in harbour operations, helping the Council's Marine Services make the most of current and future marine business opportunities and maintaining the service they’ve provided for the Flotta Terminal over many decades.

The new 32-metre tug has been built by the same company - Sanmar Shipyards of Turkey - to the same design and specification as the previous two.  The three new tugs replace the ageing fleet, which served the Council admirably for more than 30 years.

Freyja of Scapa, as Odin and Thor before her, has travelled through the Mediterranean, past Gibraltar, along the coast of Portugal, across the Bay of Biscay, through the English Channel and up the east coast of Britain, before heading north to arrive in Kirkwall.

Freyja of Scapa will be officially named at a later date - and an open day will be organised in due course.
