Temporary closure of Cursiter Recycling Centre

Date: 27 September 2022

The Council's recycling centre at Cursiter Quarry in Finstown will be closed on Wednesday 28 September, reopening on Tuesday 4 October to allow for a clean-up operation following illegal dumping of waste at the site.

Quantities of furniture and black bag waste have been left by users littering the site and causing obstruction. This will require replacement of skips and staff to be diverted from other service areas in order to clear the site ready for reopening. It is anticipated the site will not re-open until Tuesday 4 October.

Lorna Richardson, Head of Neighbourhood Services, said: “Our Cursiter facility is for recyclables only, and this is clearly signed at the facility.

“So it’s disappointing to see this waste deposited and the facility abused in this way, inconveniencing the majority of people who do make proper use of the site.

“We know the site is much appreciated by members of the public – so we’d ask all users to please help us keep it open, by only depositing the accepted recyclables.”

Materials accepted at Cursiter Recycling Centre are:

  • Cans (aluminium and steel).
  • Glass, paper, garden waste.
  • Household batteries.
  • Scrap metal.
  • Vehicle batteries.
  • WEEE (Waste electrical and electronic equipment).
  • Cardboard.
  • Fluorescent tubes (including energy bulbs).
  • Plastic bottles.

General waste should be put out for collection as part of fortnightly kerbside refuse collections, or taken to the Council’s Household Waste and Recycling Centre at Garson, Hatston or Bossack.
