Date: 23 September 2022

Graphic showing roadmap of works progress

A reminder our roads teams are out and about across the county carrying out the current programme of surfacing and patching work, as detailed below.

Thank you for your patience as we carry out these vital works to maintain our roads network for all.

The current road works on Crowness Road Hatston will be completed by close of business today, Friday (23 September).

The current flagstone repairs in Kirkwall have been completed and the street will reopen by close of business today, Friday (23 September). The team will then move to central Stromness from Monday 26 September. For more details, read our previous press release.

A reminder work starts on Craigiefield Road near its junction with Work Road on Monday 26 September 2020 with the work expected to take two days to complete. Three-way traffic lights will be in place at the junction of Craigiefield Rd and Work Road, motorists should expect short delays. Public bus Service 9 (Kirkwall Town Service) may also see minor delays.

Work and a road closure is ongoing on Durkadale Road, Birsay - this is a four-day schedule of work which started on Wednesday 21 September. A signed diversion route is in place.

On Wednesday 28 September, work is due to start at the junction with Holm Road and Easdale Loan, with Easdale Loan being closed to through traffic and temporary traffic lights in place on Holm Road at the bottom of Easedale Loan. Update - this has been postponed til further notice. The No 9 Town service will experience minor delays, and there will be a short diversion for the No 4 Airport bus, but passengers will be able to pick the bus up at both the top or the bottom of Easedale Loan.

Also starting on Wednesday 28 September is work on Church Road and the B9065 (Pier Road), Rousay. There will be some disruption to traffic with the likelihood of road closures at times to enable the works to be carried out safely, but works are expected to finish by the end of the week.

On Monday 3 October, resurfacing work is planned on Cromwell Road, with the works expected to take a week to complete. Given the nature of the work Cromwell Road will be closed to all traffic, with a signed diversion route in place. Further details to follow.

A reminder that one-day survey work on the First Barrier (A961) is planned for Thursday 6 October with traffic being controlled by Stop / Go boards and a convoy vehicle to make the area as safe as possible for the survey team. As a result, it is expected that there will be lengthy delays to traffic using the A961 with this also having a knock-on effect to traffic on the B9052 (Graemeshall Road), including the X1 public bus service between Stromness-Kirkwall-St Margarets Hope. Drivers coming from Kirkwall direction and wanting to get to Graemeshall area (for example on their way to Cornquoy area, the airport, St Andrews and Deerness), might wish to turn left off the main A961 at the Wilderness Junction, and take the B9052 to the Holm war memorial to avoid likely queues waiting to cross the First Barrier.

Works at Lynn Road previously publicised to start on 3 October have been deferred and we’ll update in due course.
