Staff at the Council are delighted that their Cancer Challenge has raised over £16,000 for Cancer Research UK.

Thanks to the generosity of people in Orkney and away, the total is £16,206.25 - more than three times the original target of £5,000.

Organisers, Inga Antonio, Lorraine Stout and Al Holmes, say the event has far exceeded their hopes.

Lorraine, a Press Officer with the Council and throat cancer survivor, said: “To say we are all delighted is an understatement. What started out as a peedie idea to raise some money for research grew quickly as colleagues came on board with the idea, followed by huge generosity from the public here in Orkney and away.

“We are all touched by cancer in some way and that is why research is so important to improve the invasive treatments and, ultimately, find a cure for all cancers.

“We want to say a massive thank you to everyone who joined us in making the challenge the success that it has been.”

Around 140 Council employees signed up to take part in the six-week distance challenge, which saw them walk, run and cycle 373km (the length of priority 1 roads in Orkney) from the end of June to the start of August.

There was also a prize draw held on Monday within the Council chamber with Convener, Graham Bevan, doing the honours. Fifty prizes were donated in all.

He praised the “monumental” effort, adding: “The feedback from many has been ‘when’s the next challenge! I want to personally thank everyone who has played a part in this very successful fundraiser. Even in these challenging times for so many, folk in Orkney have continued to give so generously, a truly extraordinary community that I am proud to be part of.”

The Council’s interim Chief Executive, John Mundell, added his thanks to staff.

“It has been a few years of unprecedented change – not just in terms of how people work, but how they view life and what they want from it.

“The Council Cancer Challenge has again demonstrated to me just how willing the staff here are to go that extra mile for others. I am very proud of those involved and know from my own personal experience of taking part that it has been great for health and wellbeing – an essential ingredient for a better workplace.

“I also want to add my gratitude for the generosity of everyone who donated in any way and their support of the challenge. A great cause, a mammoth effort and a fantastic result for Orkney as a whole.”
