A number of parents have spoken of the delight felt by their children who took part in the Inclusive Cycling and Activities Event at Orkney’s Picky Centre at the weekend.

OIC Sport and Leisure worked in partnership with Inclusive Orkney, Ability Shetland, Picky and Cycling UK to arrange the event, with the sessions on Saturday being open to all children and adults with additional support needs and their families.

One parent, who went along on Saturday, said: “I think it’s absolutely fabulous that they’ve put on an event like this, giving the children a chance to try different bikes and gain confidence. It would be nice to see something like this on a regular basis.”

Her son, who is heading into secondary after the summer, had not ridden a bike since he was 7, so it was an emotional time witnessing his delight on the track.

In the morning the outdoor track was a hive of activity with more than 20 people trying out the range of adapted bikes which were brought along by Ability Shetland, including recumbent bikes, trikes, quad bikes and hand cycles. Magdalena from Cycling UK was also there with a range of balance, pedal and electric bikes for everyone to try out.

Carer, Laura Flett, said: “This is a fab opportunity to come along and try out these bikes. The inclusive events are fantastic, there’s no judgement and everyone is so supportive.”

In the afternoon, a relaxed indoor activities session was held in the main arena which included boccia, table cricket, sports hall athletics and free play. Again, more than 20 people came along and took part.

Parent, Tessa Irvine, added: “The kids thoroughly enjoyed themselves and loved having a shot of all the activities.”

Karin Spence, Chair of Inclusive Orkney, said: “Both events were brilliant, great to work alongside Charis and Stephanie (Ability Shetland) and use their wealth of experience and look forward to more collaborative events in the future. And huge thanks to all the families that came along on Saturday, it was really lovely to see them all having fun and enjoying themselves.”
