Road works update - as at 1 July 2022

Date: 01 July 2022

Road Ahead Closed

A look at roadworks underway or about to start:

First up a reminder that Broad Street is closed tomorrow, Saturday 2 July, between Castle Street and Palace Road from 8am-4pm for a Road Safety Event with emergency services colleagues.

Then on Sunday 3 July, Broad Street, Albert Street, Bridge Street and Castle Street will see closures for the St Magnus Marathon Kirkwall, from 7.30am to 11.00am. Best of luck to all taking part!

Tomorrow (Saturday 2 July), works are planned to start on Waterfront East car park at 08:00 before moving onto the Council car park (round the back) and East Kirk car park (top of the Council car park near the guide hall). Weather dependent, it’s hoped crews will be clear of all car parks by midday, with each car park closed for just an hour or two.

Sparrowhawk Road, Hatston - From Monday 4 July, Sparrowhawk Road in Hatston will be getting resurfaced from Crowness Crescent to Gladiator Road. These works are being done in 3 phases to ensure access to all businesses is maintained as far as possible, with the total work expected to last 3 weeks. There will be signed diversions in place. The first phase will be closed from Crowness Crescent to the West side of J W Tait. Updates will be provided when this is changed to Phase 2.

Junction Road, Kirkwall - The current road works on Junction Road will continue into Monday next week - this will mean Castle Street and Castle Street car park will remain closed also. Depending on progress tomorrow there's a possibility the car parks may reopen Saturday afternoon. (Albert Street car park remains open - access it via Kiln corner roundabout). These roadworks impact on buses - check the Council website for details at www.orkney.gov.uk/bus

Heddle Road, Finstown – Works are planned to start early next week (week starting Monday 4 July) on a section below Hill of Heddle towards Grimond Road. The road will be closed during these works.

All residents and businesses directly affected by closures have been contacted.

The Council would like to thank motorists in advance for showing care and courtesy around everyone working on - and using - our roads.
