The OIC Home Carer leaving random acts of kindness to make the people of Orkney smile

Date: 24 January 2022

Random Acts of Crochet Kindness - Josie Stanger

A Council Home Carer has been sharing random acts of kindness around Orkney – despite recent surgery on her arthritic thumbs.

Josie Stanger, from Stromness, underwent a successful operation in October to relieve her painful joints and was advised by her physiotherapist to exercise her hands and fingers to strengthen and improve her grip.

As a keen knitter and also someone who enjoyed crocheting, Josie had spotted a social media page “Random Acts of Crochet Kindness” – so she knew just how to link up the two.

Josie began crocheting “worry worms” initially thinking they could help youngsters who have been through a challenging time particularly during the pandemic – but adults have also been delighted to find a crocheted gift.

Josie has shared 100 worry worms in areas around Kirkwall, Stromness, Dounby and will be heading to Finstown soon. Not only does the small bag contain a colourful crocheted worm but also a message – “When your worries become too severe, pull me out and draw me near, I will be there have no fear, your worry worm will bring you cheer.”

She has been overwhelmed with messages of thanks and appreciation from folk in the community.

“I’m in no more pain now since the operation and what better way to help myself through exercise by doing something I love and hopefully bringing a smile to others. They only take minutes to make and are very cute. I have started making mini hearts now as well and they will be shared soon.

“I have been overwhelmed by all the lovely messages I have received – one who was going to use it to help with her mindfulness. When you hear things like that, it tugs at your heart. This is a very small act  to make  a big difference in someone else’s life. We used to smile at people and get a smile back but now with the face masks you cannot do that. It’s just nice to receive something for nothing.”

Josie has worked with the Council’s Home Care service for around four years as part of a team covering the West Mainland.

“I just love it. The team I am part of has a really good vibe about it and the service users are just amazing. I love hearing older folk’s stories.”

Lynda Bradford, Head of Health and Community Care, said: “Josie’s story is yet another shining example of the extra efforts our staff go to, to put a smile on the faces of others. We are very proud to have Josie as part of our team.”
