KGS remembrance tribute to former staff and pupils killed during WW1

An incredibly poignant tribute to former staff and pupils of Kirkwall Grammar School who were killed during World War One is being shown once again throughout the corridors of the building.

In a special mark of remembrance and respect for those who made the ultimate sacrifice, a slideshow featuring the names and faces of those who perished is currently being displayed on screens as you make your way around the school.

The list as featured was largely pulled together thanks to the efforts of a now retired member of KGS staff and first shown in 2018 – as part of 100th anniversary events to mark Armistice Day and the agreement to end the fighting of World War One. The school felt it was such a special tribute that the slideshow is being replayed once more ahead of Remembrance Sunday this weekend (14 November).

KGS Head Teacher Claire Meakin said: “What a remarkable piece of work researching and documenting as accurately as can be known, those who perished during World War One, who would have at one time, been pupils and staff of Kirkwall Grammar School. Seeing all those names and faces, some of them young boys of just 19, really brings home the unimaginable reality of war. Each and every one of those featured had a life cut short and family and friends back here in Orkney left devastated.

“That is why we remember here at KGS and why the Remembrance events every year are so important for future generations to continue to be part of.”

Please take a few moments out of your day to watch the presentation and remember these brave young men and all others who gave so much for all others.
