Orkney Sports Awards

The Orkney Sports awards takes place yearly, at Kirkwall Grammar School.  The search is on for the county’s most outstanding athletes, teams and coaches.

The Orkney Sports Awards, sponsored by Stagecoach and other various organisations, is led by Orkney Islands Council’s Active Schools team. It celebrates and recognises the county’s vast sporting achievement and success over the past year. Nominations are welcome from the Orkney public who can vote in nine categories.

Find out more and nominate now using the buttons below:

The categories are:

  • Sportsperson of the year.
  • Young sportsperson of the year.
  • Team of the year.
  • Young team of the year.
  • Coach of the year.
  • Official of the year.
  • Volunteer of the year.
  • Young volunteer of the year.
  • School Sports volunteer of the year.
  • Hall of fame.

All nominations are put to a panel for shortlisting. Three finalists from each category are chosen, which will then be announced in the Orcadian and on Social Media. During the week of the event a further panel will then meet and decide the winners of each category.

If relevant, a Service to Sport Award may be presented to a nominated person who has given; above and beyond service to their sport but does not fit into any of the above categories for that year. This is decided and voted for by the panel.

Also, back by popular demand, the Hall of fame.  This is presented to a person/s who has gone above and beyond for a number so years.  Perhaps this person hasn’t been nominated before or has taken part in sport spanning decades.  This is decided and voted for by the panel.

Restrictions and the ongoing public health crisis continue to have an impact but there has been a heartening return to competitive action for a range of sports this year.

Held in January and covering the previous year of sport, it is hoped that the awards will be supported by current, past and supporters of sports people of Orkney.
